The Wonder of Life: Elizabeth’s Inspiring Journey

“Your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren, for nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:36).

First, Human life sparkles with the grandeur of God! From life in the womb to old age, human life is unique. Think about it! Two cousins, still in the womb have life and personhood: John is already pointing to Messiah and Jesus is already recognized and worshipped by John, by Elizabeth, and by Mary.

In old age, Elizabeth is still experiencing the wonder of life. God is not finished with what He has planned. In breathless wonder, she gives birth to a son and the stigma of childlessness is swept away in a baby’s cry.

Second, the life of faith is a supernatural life. Only those who find themselves in relationship with God can expect to see his wonders. His promises are invitations to trust Him in His power and His goodness. Elizabeth’s story leads us to amazement.

Finally, when we look at the example of Elizabeth, we recognize a woman just like us. No particular skill or merit of her own, her part in the supernatural comes about because of her faith. It can be the same with us. We can display the glory of God in our experience. Our testimony of faith can be the story of the miraculous. As Elizabeth Elliot famously asked, “What is there in your life that is impossible to explain apart from God?”
