Good Bible studies and references don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Here are several free sites that have been a great help to me:
- E-sword is a free Bible study program that includes great helps and a variety of resources, including commentaries, encyclopedias (ISBE), and note-taking functions. I have used it for years and it is a great help. Besides the basic program (which is pretty extensive), there are add-ons available for additional cost. Here’s the link: https://www.e-sword.net/
- Soniclight.com (Plano Bible Chapel) includes the extensive class notes from the teaching ministry of Dallas Theological Seminary professor Thomas Constable. The notes cover every book of the Bible and are updated regularly. He has made all of his work free.
- Desiringgod.org is the online home of John Piper. It is the repository for all of his sermons, searchable by topic or book. It is a great resource for Bible application. Dr. Piper has an infectious way of communicating his life motto- “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”
- Gty.org is the online home of John MacArthur. Every sermon he has preached is searchable by topic and book. Both the audio version and the transcript of that sermon is available. MacArthur is a great example of scripture interpreting scripture.
- https://www.ligonier.org is the online home of R. C. Sproul. Many of his video series, articles, and blogposts are available free of charge. He is joined by a number of other teachers, including Sinclair Ferguson, etc.
- Chuck Swindoll has some incredible resources on his website and app. He makes great application on a variety of topics. He also has study notes available on many of those sermons which carry on the ministry of his sermons. Here’s the link: https://www.insight.org/
- Ken Boa has a great library of resources under headings like Spiritual Formation, Culture, and Beauty as well as topics you would expect like Old Testament, New Testament, Theology, Apologetics, etc. His website is kenboa.org
- Al Mohler was a daily podcast (on hiatus every July) in which he analyzes the news of the day from a Christian perspective. His site also has interviews with a variety of scholars on cultural issues. As well, some of his speaking engagements are recorded and made available. Check out his archive this month, then join him for excellent analysis of the culture again in August.
I’m always on the lookout for Bible study aids online. Let me know what else you have found to be a help!
